Speaker 1: Larry Colbert, President/CEO Junior Achievement of Memphis, Inc.

Our Speaker for the evening will be Larry Colbert. Larry is the President and CEO of Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South, a non-profit 501c3 economic education and financial literacy organization whose mission is to teach kids about business and economics so they will become better prepared for the workforce once they finish school. In Memphis, more than 7,500 students participate in JA each year. The programs are taught by volunteers from all walks of life, including: business people, college students, parents and retirees. These dedicated individuals are the backbone of the organization.

Larry has been with Junior Achievement for 20 years. He is responsible for a staff of eight and a current budget of $1.5 million dollars. He also manages all aspects of the organization including management of the volunteer board, state mandates & governance, audits and fundraising. He held previous positions of Director of Special Events, Vice President of Marketing and Senior Vice President prior to his current role. Larry is originally from Atlanta, GA and holds a BBA Degree in Economics from the University of Georgia. 

Prior to his time with Junior Achievement, Larry had a 20-year career in retail, the last 15 of those years with Target Stores. His positions were Store Manager, Company Trainer and District Communication and PR Manager. 

Larry has accumulated a number of credits and certificates for team building exercises, mentoring new team members and development. He has also been awarded the American Express Creative Leadership Award and the Penn State Strategic Leadership Award. Larry is a graduate of the 2012 Leadership Memphis Executive Class, an East Memphis Rotarian for the past 15 years and also served as Club President 2010-2011. Larry was recognized in 2012 by the Tri-State Defender as one of the Mid-South’s “Men of Distinctions” Awardees and a Finalist for their 2014 “Best in Black Awards”. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and is also the current president of the Pro-Duffers South Golf Club.
